Why people resist changes

In my previous post, I mentioned that we can adapt to huge changes in lifestyle gradually. But many people are reluctant to change, even if such change is good for them in the long run.

I think people resist changes because they want to see instant result. Normally changes require a period of transformation, be it weight losing or body building. Not many people want to go through strict diet and exercising for six months even if the outcome is rewarding.

People always want to stick to their comfort zone. They are already used to their old lifestyle and the idea of change triggers the fear of uncertainty, or sometimes laziness. Maybe that’s because people yearn for stability in life. And changes might potentially ruin such stability,

The initial stage of doing something new is painful. We usually struggle a lot when we do something for the first time. After doing it for a few times, we perform better and gain more confidence. And after years of doing it, we become so good at it until we can perform it with eyes closed. The painful struggle at the early stage of changes might scare off many people. They have to learn new things, struggle with things they are not sure of, and experience something they are not used to. For example, beginner runners experience a lot of pain and fatigue, which is not pleasant to most people.

Changes require sacrifice. Not every one is willing to pay such price.
