Study less and do well in exam!
That’s what super students do. They don’t study hard. They study smart. What you are about to read is how smart students manage to do less and get more.
Efficiency means using less resource, such as time and energy, to get better result. That’s the secret to smart studying. The student who studies 30 minutes a day and gets straight A in exam is efficient; where else the nerd who studies 9 hours per day and gets the same result isn’t. The nerd is both hardworking and highly inefficient. You won’t want to be a nerd, unless you enjoy studying the whole day without a life.
When we talk about efficiency, we must mention resource. Yes, I know you seldom think about “resource” when come to study skill but learning about it speeds up your journey to success. Resource is whatever we have with us to achieve our goals. It’s limited, so we have to manage it carefully. For example, everyone only has 24 hours a day, and a few weeks more to go before exam. If a student uses it on unproductive activities like partying and sleeping whole day, the time resource is wasted. If you use your time well, probably you will have enough time to prepare for exam while going out with friends every weekend!
To use our resource well, we need to create a study system. Our resources will be channelled into the study system to produce result, such as better understanding of a subject, or well remembered facts. Without a study system, our resource will not be well used, which results in wastage a.k.a. inefficiency. The good news is that creating a study system is rewarding. It’s our actual “success formula”, which can be brought forward to our further level of education. The study system you use for O-level education can be used in A-level education and university courses. Maybe you need to adjust the study system to suit the new environment, but it will stay there with you for the rest of your life. Sounds like a good investment, don’t you think so?
Although an efficient study system uses less resource to yield better result, we still need sufficient amount of resource for this system to work. Let’s say, in our study system, we need to study one hour a day. But if we only have half an hour a day to study, things won’t work. That’s why we also need to manage our resources. For this scenario, we need to manage our time so that we can free up more time to study one hour a day.
Here’s the summary of our magic formula:
Resource + Resource management + Efficient study system = Success
.
Now let’s have a look at resource. Which resources can we exploit to achieve study success? I shall list six of them here:
Time
Knowledge
Human
Material
Money
Energy
.
This is the basic of how to study efficiently. I shall proceed to the details of how to carry out the whole master plan in my next post. For now, let’s enjoy a cup of coffee, shall we?

Hie,
As a student, I had times when i tried searching the web for study tips and relaxation tips when exam stress got in the way. I think stressed out A-levels students will give this site a read. But A levels are over now. Everyone holiday mood already^^. Merry Xmas!
I wish I have 2 head resources =p
so i can pass with flying colors
This is super. Can’t wait for the upcoming posts. Great blog you have in here!
Interesting concept, and I think most students would agree. Here’s a question for you: Even within the group of students who all study for 30 minutes (instead of 9 hours), isn’t there a difference in efficiency and effectiveness? I’d be intrigued in a follow-up post where you take a look at this idea of similar but different. Is 30 minutes a day after class the same as 30 minutes before bed?
Cheers,

Merry Xmas
You can tell you friends about this site. Thank you ^_^
@Lisa
simple. Use human resource
@Nathaniel
Thanks! I hope to see you around. Have fun reading!
@Peter
Thanks!
I would recommend after class because it will bury the study materials in long term memory more effectively than studying later. There’s a recalling ability graph in Tony Buzan’s book that support this.
Efficient = study less and produce good result
Effective = produce good result
U have a nice site Peter. See u later
whee~~I may try your methods…Thanks..
@ Sharlynn
welcome
come back again for more cool study tips !
i like it but most teenagers would not take the time to read this(like me) try to condense these notes and it will be a lot easier for viewers to understand and it will be less overwhelming.
