I would like to share with you some meaningful stories related to Chinese New Year. They are emotional and show the spirit of family relationship. These stories are actually Petronas Chinese New Year ads. Some of them are old ads, but they are timeless and can be told again and again, year after year. Most of the ads have nostalgic retro feel and are full of regional cultural elements. I think the team behind Petronas ads did a very good job in telling stories. Let’s have a look at some of them.

The Son

This Petronas 2009 ad shows the dialogue between a young man and his old mother in the form of flashback about his life with his late father. Due to their huge generation gap, the young man always got annoyed with many things his late father did in the past. After losing his father, the young man regrets that he didn’t appreciate the time he had with his father when he was still alive. He doesn’t want to make the same mistake with his mother, so he decides to invite his mother to live with him.

Grandma’s love

This 2005 ad shows a grandma who lives with her grandson. Due to poverty, the grandma always had to work very hard to support themselves. But they love each other very much. Finally, the grandson grows up to be a successful person. It’s about love.

Grandpa’s legacy

This is a dialogue between and old grandpa and his young grandson. He carved some chopsticks so that his descendants will reunite together every year for reunion dinner. His legacy lives till today, although he’s no longer alive.

Lonely New Year

This ad shows a primary school kid who doesn’t know how it’s like to celebrate Chinese New Year with family, because he doesn’t have one. On the last school day before Chinese New Year break, all his school friends go back to their respective family to celebrate New Year. He has to spend the festival at orphanage. I think this story tells us that some people don’t have the privilege to experience Chinese New Year family reunion and we should be grateful that we can reunite with our families.

Four old ladies

During Chinese New Year eve, four ladies sit and talk about their children. They, except one lady, boast about their children’s career and success. Despite being successful, none of their children come to visit them during Chinese New Year. Only the lady who didn’t boast is lucky to meet his son and grandchildren at the end.
