How to overcome homesickness
Working or studying in a foreign country can be an exciting experience. But after several months of leaving home, it’s quite possible to become homesick.
We keep thinking of family, home food, home town, old friends, and the good old days, where life was simple. Such nostalgic feeling might grow so strong and lure us to go back home. That’s not really what we want.
It’s important to integrate ourselves to local society and culture. Mix around with more people. Talk to them more often. Besides making you feel warm in foreign land, such ice breaking softens local people’s prejudice and misunderstanding against foreigners. Hiding in your own countrymen ghetto will only strengthen your homesickness and loneliness.
Focusing on your career or study goal helps you to stay grounded. Just see the success in achieving your goal as a way to bring glory back home later. Keep yourself occupied and you’ll be fine. Practising tai chi and breathing exercise is a good place to start.
I believe that you’ll go back home sooner or later. Staying in foreign land is just temporary for you so don’t worry too much. Enjoy life and get new experience. Homesickness is not really that bad. It actually makes you appreciate things that you have at home.
Don’t forget to be a good boy and call mama. She might be worrying for you.
