4 essential qualities of a successful blog

There are a lot of blogs out there. It’s not easy to simply categorize them as good / bad, which is subjective and best left to the readers to judge. However, successful blogs share some of these similarities:

1.    Core theme

Readers come to your blog for a reason – to learn new things, read jokes, or look at your photos. Focusing on your core theme will keep your readers following you. If you mix everything like politics, jokes, and traveling all in one blog, your blog will lose focus and your readers will get confused. They might not want to subscribe to your blog (unless you write very well). Therefore, pick a niche and stick to it.

2.    Quality content

If you put effort to generate good content and give value to your readers, most likely people will follow you. Good quality content is scarce and is highly sought after. However, there’s always exception. Some junky looking blogs are also successful. Even copy and paste blogs like FAIL blog are unexpectedly popular. Read below to find out why.

3.    Emotional factor

If you can make your readers’ go WOW after they read your blog, you’re on the right track. FAIL blog might look simple, but it’s very funny – so funny until its readers tell all their friends about it and make it even more popular. You don’t have to write something funny, but at least your blog shouldn’t sound like a dead fish that bores your readers to death. Try your best to make them feel something.

4.    Optimum update frequency

Good blogs are constantly updated. I think there should be an optimum update frequency, ranging from once a day to twice a week. Updating your blog too often (20 times a day) might risk losing your blog subscribers (unless you’re blogging for Engadget and Lifehacker). Not updating your blog for months is just as good as closing down your blog.

Good tips! But it all depends what you want to achieve with your blog. Are you blogging for the sake of blogging and sharing your thoughts? Or are you blogging for money?

If you are blogging for money, it’s not necessary to update your blog often. In fact, you can leave your blog not updated for months, yet you can still earn a good passive income from it.

These are all great tips. I also think what happens in the comment section is important. Especially when commenters address each other or make comments about one another’s comments.

tee hee hee..I was just about to blog something similar like this! So just to let you know if you happen to see a post like that in my blog, I am not copying you ya!

And I agree about the niche thingy. I think it’s important for blogger to have their own styles. And sometimes it’s not easy to find one!

@ Davina

Yes. Comment is important. It’s the interaction part of the blog!
The most important aspect is still the quality of blog post, in my opinion.

@ molly

Thanks! :D

@ Gonzo Romero

Yeah I understand. It’s better if your blog focus on a core theme. That’s how some bloggers attract traffic.

If you are blogging for money, it is especially important to update your blog often, since that helps with your search engine optimization (SEO), which brings more people to your blog, which increases your passive income.

Good tips!

Another important quality is the appearance. Decorate your blog appropriately with suitable elements. Having too many unnecessary widgets on the blog is simple nonsensical to some readers. Navigation across the blog is vital too - it allows readers to go through the blog easily and explore more of the blog content.

Hey, ok, I get it, I guess - but does this really work?

Filme Downloaden 07.18.09 at 2:27 pm

Sometimes it’s really that simple, isn’t it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.

Rana Sinha 07.19.09 at 7:22 am

Good article. Relevance to readers is also very important. Even if the content is high quality, if it’s not relevant then people are not interested. Getting access to the right sort of readers is thus vital.

@ Ann

I think content quality is just as important. Every thing count!

@ kenwooi

Thanks for the tips!

@ Crack

@ Rana Sinha

I think a relevant blog is a blog that keeps to its niche constantly.

@ LnddMiles

Thanks!
